Story taken from: http://www.dailykos.com/story/2011/10/2 ... ia=siderec

Titled: The End of Twitter and Youtube

Quote:
A bit of an emergency: The rumor all over Capitol Hill is that the House version of the Internet Blacklist Bill (PROTECT IP Act) will be introduced this week -- probably tomorrow -- by congressmembers Bob Goodlatte (R-VA), Lamar Smith (R-TX) and others.

Our allies on the Hill say the bill's so bad that it could effectively destroy YouTube, Twitter, and other sites that rely on user-generated content by making the sites' owners legally responsible for everything their users post. Nobody will want to take that risk, so these sites and others could be forced to shut down if it manages to pass as it stands.

Facebook, Myspace, and Google+ would be at risk. The cyberlocker and streaming provisions could affect your iPhone, Android, AmazonCloud, Pandora, Grooveshark and even your email accounts.

Our information is not from bomb-throwing activists, but rather the people who run some of the most established and respected civil liberties and tech freedom outfits, along with lobbyists for a few corporations that oppose the legislation.

The original PROTECT IP Act would give the government new powers to block Americans' access to sites accused of copyright infringement. Its Senate form would enable censorship and generally stifle innovation online. (Which is why civil libertarians, tech activists, entrepreneurs, venture capitalists, and Internet engineers have vocally opposed it.) It's being pushed by Hollywood, the Recording Artists, Pharma, and the Chamber of Commerce. It was introduced by Senator Patrick Leahy (D-VT) and is being blocked by a 'hold' issued by Ron Wyden (D-OR).

This new, even more extreme position might be a negotiating tack, or it might be a manifestation of DC's limited knowledge about the Internet and how most Americans make use of it -- a failing they've demonstrated time and again in recent months.

Either way, all of this is -- surprise -- being driven by a few major corporations that are trying to protect their private profits. They're combining at least four of their more noxious proposals into this omnibus grab-bag of corporate goodies.

The draft bill would:

1) Give the government and private corporations new powers to block access to sites accused of copyright infringement;

2) Criminalize the streaming of copyrighted content;

3) Restrict cloud-based storage services, music lockers, and the like;

4) Create the aforementioned new liabilities for sites that encourage the posting of user-generated content.

If you're an American citizen, please take the time to visit the link I provided and scroll down and click on the link that says "Demand Progress is asking people to urge their congressmembers to refuse to cosponsor the House version of the bill. You can do so by clicking here." If you aren't an American citizen, post this story wherever you can to spread awareness.

allthough I'm not an american citizen, I took the time to send that email on the link, and shared it on facebook.

Stopping this to start in America, will also help to not let our european governments come with similar ideas. I think.

my english is very bad when I have to make complicated sentenses, I'm sorry

Post  Re: The end of internet freedom?

Apparently the author of that article was jumping the gun a bit, the house version of the bill still hasn't been released. This is the only thing I could find about it

"A spokeswoman for Goodlatte declined to comment on the legislation, referring questions to the House Judiciary Committee, where Smith is chairman. A spokeswoman for Smith didn't respond to a request for information about the bill."

That's funny on so many levels. Especially like... wtf, does everyone really need a spokeswoman? lol but yeah, they must be re-writing the bill or something, hopefully because of how negative the response on the internet was, but even re-written I don't think it will ever be acceptable, they'll just change some wording to make it sound a little less restrictive. I'm sure if it passes it'll be quashed within a month or two anyway though, there are way too many people on the internet who won't stand for that, this bill is a horrible idea in that sense because it'll only unite people on the internet against the system even more than they already are.

Lol, this isn't related at all, I just think it's hilarious but not quite thread-worthy. K, so the Whitehouse has a website where you can sign in and make/sign petitions and if you get enough signatures they're supposed to look into the issue or whatever. So a few days ago they released statements regarding the 3 biggest petitions, one was about marijuana law reform, one was removing "under god" from the constitution or whatever and I can't remember the other one. I read the marijuana one and it was bullshit, it seriously could have been written in the 60's, they didn't say anything new, just clinged to all the old ideology and hypocrisy that has never been proven. So this petition was made in response.

we petition the obama administration to:
Actually take these petitions seriously instead of just using them as an excuse to pretend you are listening

Although the ability to submit petitions directly to the White House is a noble and welcome new feature of the current administration, the first round of responses makes blatantly clear the White House intends to just support its current stances and explain them with responses everyone who has done any research already knows.

An online petition is not meant as a replacement for using a search box in a web browser. We the People, those who grant you the power to govern in the first place, are requesting changes in policy directly, circumventing legislators who already do not listen to us. We the People request you govern FOR us, which means actually listening to us and actually acting in our interests instead of special interests.

You are not above us. You ARE us. Govern accordingly.

Lol. whoever wrote that is a boss. But, it doesn't really make sense if you think about it, they can't just be changing everything that 20,000 people agree on, a lot more than 20,000 people think weed should be illegal, so if they operated like that it could just go back and forth forever. But yeah, I hope the whitehouse responds to that one lol

ACTA has also been signed by several countries now...

It's going to get so much worse before it gets better!

Though, it's a great thing when it is so very easy to disregard this shit and do it anyways.

Yeah, it's bullshit. People need to realize that the idea of "intellectual property" is fucking retarded and stifles science and technological progress.

That's not true at all, lol Tor was created by the American Navy. If they want to figure out what you did on Tor, all they have to do is watch exit nodes. More than likely they won't do shit to you, but more than likely they won't do shit to you on firefox either, unless you're trying to download child porn or hack government agencies. Plus, it's slow as fuck for non-onion sites.

If you want to be completely anonymous, you need to use a reliable VPN(most keep logs and will hand them over to the FBI as soon as they ask, it's been proven. Ask Lulzsec, Anonymous, etc.), you need to hide your IP, you need a killer firewall like BlackICE, and you also need to use Tor. One or two of those will keep the random stranger from figuring out everything you've ever done on the internet, but a good hacker won't be stopped by any one of those, and you're crazy if you don't think the government has some badass hackers.

You need more knowledge than is realistic for the average user, to be anonymous online. If that is necessary, there will be very few free people on the internet, though I agree with you, as of right now it is impossible to COMPLETELY control the internet, but it could be ridiculously close.

Post  Re: The end of internet freedom?

yes i agree if they want they will find you whatever you do... but i don't think the will waste their time tracking people on what they are doing all the time, and this cost a great amount of money and time and they wont use em for a bunch (a great number) of "punks" who they know very well already what they do when and how etc as we all have a record in the police after being arrested or just caught during demonstrations/riots or just pointed out by inside people who blend among us in real life (at least here in Greece)
and as long as for "Killing" the "freedom" in tthe internet it will have a huge impact on the economy and they wont take any chances on that... only and only for that the internet "freedom" will never die as long as THEY have something to gain from it...
as for proxy es the might kill the internet speed but they also hide your ass wile doing some activism job by posting thing about things :P and you must always to remember to switch the IP after every post to make it extremely hard time for a possible hacker who will try to find you...
our deeds might have consequences whits we are all aware but we are all still doing em cause we believe in something

The congressional hearing for the censorship of the internet(PROTECT IP and Stop Online Privacy Acts) is today, so we'll all soon learn the outcome of this bullshit.

Here's a good little video explaining the implications of PROTECT IP, if anyone's interested.
