I had found a copy of Three Mile Pilot's "Piano Minus" 7", and i was never the same, excruciatingly sad music led by piano and quiet croon. Around the same time a pen pal in San Diego had sent me a tape with tracks by Three Mile Pilot and their new incarnation the Black Heart Procession letting me know that it wasn't just a great 7", this was a great band. For the next year or so i tried my damnedest to find an album by either, but it seemed a fruitless endeavor, that is until i went to Kansas. Brian and I were headed up to Lawrence to see Pavement for what would be our last time to see them when we stopped in Garnett so Brian could use the bathroom. He chose this weird little taco bell/truck stop to hit up, and in hindsight i couldn't have been happier. He goes to the bathroom, i go to the counter and decide to play scratch ticket lottery for the first time (Oklahoma didn't have a lottery until two years ago), and won a hundred dollars. I was floored, Brian comes out of the bathroom and I'm screaming "I just won a hundred bucks!" across the place. I didn't have a great deal of cash on me when we started the trip, but now i had money to burn, and Lawrence had some great record stores. We finally made it to Larry and had a few hours before the show started so i instigated a trip over to Lovegarden (the pre-eminent record store of Lawrence, Ks). I was there for maybe five minutes before it caught my eye, a Three Mile Pilot section, and not only that, it was full!Three full lengths and an ep on Gravity, with a hundred bucks in my pocket and twelve dollar price tags i did the math and went home with everything. The music inside is a more rocked out version of what Black Heart Procession would become, a sound Pinback would try and capture, but never could get down fully (even with half of 3MP). A bit bass heavy with a nasty penchant for flange, with layers of piano and guitar thrown in topped with a side of melancholy. Lyrics about solitude and horses, the vast wasteland of San Diego laid before you by four of her cherished sons. One of my top ten records, Another Desert, Another Sea would be the last time Three Mile Pilot would record and function as a band for nearly ten years, shortly after this record, they were over, Pall and Tobias formed Black Heart Procession ( a sound hinted at on the Gravity ep), Zach and Tom joined Rob Crow to start Pinback. By far the best record of their all to brief career, this captures them in all their beauty and disillusionment as told from a restless sea. It's time you found a new home.
