Yes, but Emo has become a very convoluted term, being used for everyone from Rites of Spring to Sunnyday Realestate to Weezer to My Chemical Romance to Thursday to Red Jumpsuit Apparatus. How can all these bands really be one genre? It seems to be a catch all for a lot of very mediocre music and what would have been called emo originally no longer fits in the genre. Just like Hardcore. It's hard to think of Minor Threat and Black Flag sharing a genre with Suicide Silence or Hatebreed

I half agree with this post. Suicide Silence is "screamy" while Hatebreed is more metal oriented. HB recently did an awesome cover of Black Flag's "Thirsty and Miserable". Although the music has developed and changed since the 80s, the influence and motivation haven't. A lot of hardcore bands still play fast and trashy and Regan is no different from Bush. So American Hardcore is still Hardcore as i see it.

I agree with socialcancer, genres are bullshit! Why can't it just be music. And I have never understood the whole emo thing anyways. Maybe I am just too old!

But what about finding stuff you like in a similar vein to band x or band y? As far as ONLY listening to something if it's of a certain genre, that's fucking stupid, and a great way to limit your music taste, but I can see the purpose of genres. I never would have found out about a lot of great bands if not for their genre tags, I can tell you THAT for sure.

I don't even care about self destruction anymore..what's the use???

I would agree that original emo isn't even close to what is called "emo" now....it seems all to be about fashion now and not even about some kind of message...I would say in general, if you want to find emo bands that call themselves punk go to purevolume.com, looked up punk on there and the only bands that came up were emo and sounded exactly the same. Back in the day, like 10 years ago that site used to be good for finding music but I have turned to other sources now.

For some reason unknown to me those "scene" (skinny jeans, anime hair, colorful clothes) bands that play metalcore, deathcore or any type of music wich involves harsh vocals are labeled as screamo because kids think that screamo is a singing technique. And the term Emo being used for alternative rock bands is most likely because of the wave of Indie-Emo bands like Sunny Day Real Estate and The Promise Ring in the 90s and someone working for MTV couldn't tell the difference between them and Jimmy Eat World.
This shit sucks, I mean if the bands weren't that shitty it wouldn't bother me that much but my favorite genre is screamo and I cant even tell anyone uninformed because they think I mean Alesana, My Chemical Romance or Suicide Silence.

I don't know one real Emo/Screamo band that would even slightly fit the stereotype that is so widespread, maybe beside the emotional lyrics and rarely whiny vocals, but every genre has songs with emotional lyrics.
